Kleinman.com didn't start out as a whole mega information site, it all started back in early 1995 with a single HTML page that we did about our cat Billie. It was an exercise in learning HTML, and we had no idea it would lead us to this!
The Kleinman.com Family of Web Sites now include 4 separate and successful sites:
Heather Kleinman's Cosmetic Connection - Started back in 1996, Heather Kleinman's Cosmetic Connection was created to fill the gap created by the extreme lack of content relevant to women on the Internet (that type of content was pretty sparse back in 1995!). The site quickly gained attention of women around the globe and is favored by many as one of their most cherished Internet sites. Heather Kleinman's Cosmetic Connection has been featured in a dizzying number of publications including: Allure, Self, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Shape, YM, Seventeen, ABC, and the Los Angeles Times. Heather is considered by many to be the foremost expert on makeup and cosmetics and her site is considered one of the best resources for unbiased cosmetic information and advice.
Ask The Makeup Diva - With the success of Heather Kleinman's Cosmetic Connection, Heather decided to spin off the Ask The Makeup Diva section from her site. The section which was extremely popular reached an even wider audience on it's own site. Ask The Makeup Diva has been featured in many magazines and newspapers and is considered by many to be the "Dear Abby" of cosmetic advice.
DVD Talk - Started in early 1999, DVD Talk was created at a time when DVD was just beginning to boom and there was a real gap in DVD resources online. The vision of the site was to create an online DVD community that helps people find best DVDs, at the best online stores, for the best price. We never had any idea how successful it would be. Shortly after it launched DVD Talk was attributed with being a part of the online backlash and eventual death of DIVX, it has been the center of many incredible online DVD events and the hub of information for some of the most incredible sales on the Internet.
The Kleinman Report - Started back in Mid 1995 and originally titled "The biweekly Business Internet Report", The Kleinman Report has followed the raise of Amazon.com, Yahoo.com, Netscape, Ask Jeeves and many others from their initial launch (and virtual obscurity) to their ultra-mega success. Started with 100 subscribers (50 e-mail and 50 fax) The Kleinman Report has grown to over fourteen thousand monthly subscribers. Written by Geoffrey Kleinman it is one of the most respected publications of it's kind. So here's a little about us:
Geoffrey Kleinman - born in 1970 in San Francisco, Geoff spent the first 18 years of his life in the East Bay in a little town called Moraga. As a pre-teen he was very involved with theater and even considered a career in acting. In addition to acting Geoff had an big interest in computers and was active in the new and emerging world of online bulletin boards in 1996 the Bay Area. For a short time he even ran his own BBS using a 512K Mac and the only phone line leading to his parents home (the board was called Inkblot's Spot).
Geoff went to highschool at Campolindo Highschool where he produced several independent video projects including a horror spoof Sunday the 27th (Jason's Little Brother). In 1988 Geoff left California to attend college at Ithaca College where he majored in Cinema and Photography and minored in Politics. During college Geoff had several summer jobs in the entertainment industry including being a video editor (for weddings), an intern on the Michael J Fox film The Hard Way a runner for a commercial production company, and script development for the Badham/Coen Group. Also during college Geoff produced the TV documentary Combat Correspondents and the play of Rod Serling's life story Serling's World. At Ithaca Geoff met Heather who quit school to move with Geoff to Los Angeles after graduation in 1992.
Heather Kleinman - Born in 1972 in Middletown CT, moved around the country with her mother when she was young to a number of states including New Hampshire, Utah, and Florida. Finally stopping in Lake Mary Florida (outside of Orlando) Heather attended Lake Brantley High School where she was very active in guard. In 1991 Heather attended Ithaca College and majored in both French and Spanish. In 1992 Heather decided to quit school, pack up all her belongings and move with Geoff to Los Angeles. In Los Angeles she attended Occidental College and helped support us while Geoff was trying to get his break in the Film Industry.
In Los Angeles Geoff tried to pursue a career in the film industry. At first he did a number of production assistant jobs on various commercials and then he got a break and got a job at the top talent agency - Creative Artists Agency where he worked as an assistant to a TV Movie of the Week Packaging Agent. After getting a taste of LA's Entertainment 'fast lane' Geoff decided to take a job as the assistant editor at Chanticleer Films for a film called The Last Shot which starred Gary Marshal and Adam Baldwin. It was in Los Angeles that Geoff bought Heather Bille The Cat to commemorate the anniversary of the day they had met.
After finishing work on The Last Shot Geoff and Heather decided that Los Angeles wasn't for us, and we packed up all our things and moved to Portland, OR. In Portland, Heather got a job at TRM while Geoff tried to find work. Due to the recession in 1993 work was hard to come by so Geoff worked at a number of 'bread and butter' jobs including: Waiting Tables at Red Lobster, Managing a Database at a Law Firm, and being an account manager at a promotional products company. In 1994 Geoff and Heather got married and honeymooned in Europe.
In 1995 the big break happened and the hobby that Geoff had been spending long hours with since he was young became a business. Early in 1995 Geoff started his own Internet Consulting company where he helped people get connected to the Internet. In May of 1995 Geoff merged his consulting company with one of the first start up web design companies in Portland called Vulcan's Forge. Heather quit her job at TRM (after being promoted to the Marketing Department) to join Geoff at Vulcan's Forge. During that time Geoff started The Kleinman Report, he traveled to one of the first Internet World Shows where he met the crew from Yahoo (just as they were launching an early version of their site!)
As the Internet began to take off a business Internet provider One World Internetworking recruited both Heather and Geoff to found the Portland operations of the start up company. During her time at One World Internetworking Heather returned to school to complete her degree. It was at Portland State University that Heather began to study both cosmetics and writing. Heather and Geoff helped One World Internetworking through the venture capital and funding process as well as helped build the market for its services in Portland.
In 1996 Heather decided it was time to go out on her own and she left One World Internetworking to start Cosmetic Connection and complete her degree. Shortly after Geoff was hired into Intel as an Internet Marketing Manager.
During his three years at Intel Geoff worked on many online consumer campaigns including the Pentium w/ MMX, Pentium II and Pentium III processor. His first project at Intel was the Intel Internet Connection Advisor, which was bundled with Microsoft NetMeeting and is a part of the Windows 98 operating system. The Intel Internet Connection adviser is the most widely distributed piece of Intel Software. Geoff was responsible for growing Intel's Owner's Club from 70K members to 350K members in just six months and ran some of the most successful consumer promotions to date. At Intel Geoff was responsible for the success of several e-mail newsletters including Info@Intel, The Intel Owner's Club Newsletter, and Channel News.
While Geoff worked at Intel, Heather's work on the Cosmetic Connection flourished, with recognition and mentions in a wide number of publications. Heather accepted a number of invitations for interviews on Radio shows and television morning programs. Cosmetic Connection was growing faster than we would ever have expected. In early 1998 Heather spun off a popular area of her site into Ask The Makeup Diva, which grew at an even faster rate than Cosmetic Connection had.
Towards late 1998 something happened that changed everything. Heather gave birth to our daughter Hannah Rose Kleinman. During one of the many late night feedings Geoff registered the URL for DVDTalk.com and 20 hours later launched the first version of DVDTalk.com
Heather and Geoff had their hands full with the newest member of the Kleinman Family and their web sites all of which were growing by leaps and bounds. In July of 1999 Geoff took his leave from Intel, contributed to a best selling book on E-mail Newsletters and spent his time with Hannah and Heather. Heather's sites experienced explosive growth and success with the boom of cosmetics online, and continued to take care of the newest member of our family.
Geoff & Heather now run DVD Talk, spends loads of time with his daughter Hannah and consults with companies on how to get the most out of the Internet and e-mail newsletters. Heather continues to run Cosmetic Connection and Makeup Diva, is often consulted by major cosmetic companies on what they should do to improve their products and is often sited as a leading expert on cosmetics and skincare.
Best Regards,
Geoffrey Kleinman & Heather Kleinman
